KUALA LUMPUR: It was all smiles and laughter for some 300 homeless people around the city centre when they were treated to an iftar feast by UiTM Holdings here today.
Many in the crowd were elderly folks and single mothers, who all queued up patiently in front of Anjung Singgah along Jalan Lekiu as early as 2.30pm for their iftar packages and health checks.
They were also offered free haircuts.
Also present at the event were local celebrities such as Zara Zya, Amar Asyraf and Tajdid Hadhari to add to the air of festivities.
A mother of four from Melaka, who only wanted to be known as Aerni, said she was grateful for today.
“I just came to the city four months ago hoping to get a job, but life was so difficult and I have been struggling to find a job. I ended up doing odd jobs on a daily basis,” she said, adding that it is not every day she gets to have a proper meal for iftar.
Celebrity Amar Asyraf, 31, said that he was so glad to be invited to join this event.
“I have always been involved with charity works to help the homeless, but I have only distributed food with an NGO, Dapur Jalanan since 2015. Coming here today makes me happy that I am able to do my part to help those in need,” he said.
Also present at the event were chief executive officer of Yayasan Kebajikan Negara Datuk Rafek Reshidullah and UiTM Holdings Group Corporate Marketing and Communication head Irma Mahamad Tahir.
