KUALA LUMPUR: Bringing art and charity together to raise funds for the local community is ‘Altruism’, an exhibition by the New Straits Times Press’ Galeri Prima, in collaboration with Segaris Art Center.
Altruism will be showcasing artworks by 50 emerging and established artists and was officially opened on Wednesday night at Galeri Prima in Bangsar.
New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Berhad (NSTP) chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Jalil said that the charity exhibition pays particular attention to Malaysians, who will be affected by the monsoon season, which will pound most states in the country until early next year.
“A portion of the proceeds raised from Altruism will be donated to the Tabung Bencana NSTP-Media Prima.
“The proceeds will help to alleviate the suffering and burden of those affected by the floods. It will also benefit those who may be affected in the future,” he said.
He also pointed out that Segaris Art Center is well-known for its CSR effort in promoting young Malaysian artists.
Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) deputy vice-chancellor, Industry Community Alumni Entrepreneurship Network (ICAEN), Prof Dr Zaini Abdullah said that the charity exhibition will also act as a great platform for the up-and-coming artists to stage their work.
“Art transcends race, religion or status and this exhibition gives these emerging artists a chance to showcase their art to the public.
“Segaris Art Center is under UiTM Holdings Sdn Bhd where most of the talented artists showcasing their art here have studied at the university.
“Every chance to present their talent is a good opportunity. The exhibition also gives them a chance to give back to the community,” said Zaini who is also the chairman of Segaris Art Center.
Both galleries have meticulously selected 80 works of art which the public can view and purchase for a good cause.
Also present at the launch was NSTP chief commercial officer Datuk Alfian Abu Talib and NSTP general manager marketing Farah Ezrin Mohd Rashidi and Galeri Prima manager Azlynn Aziz.
Altruism is open to the public from now until Dec 8 from 10am to 6pm on weekdays. It is also open on weekends, but by appointment only.
